Absolute Values: Does it Relate to Mathematics?

Before I came to this country I used to study in Dbayy in a British system school, which was called RSB. During my last year I chose to take AS-lever curriculum, in which I had to choose three optional subjects. One of which was mathematics. As I was aware there were also five other core subjects, which included Arabic, Islamic Studies, English, Project and Information Technology. I wonder if the subject in the title is my favourite (<_<)

It is indeed. I enjoy playing with numbers and letters, especially 'x', ie. algebra. Though, I was not much into geometry (v_v) Anyways, I was one of my teacher's favourite students, as I was one of the "good" kids. He wanted me to take further maths (<_<) I rejected his offer, despite I liked the way he teached. Unfortunately for him, I graduated that year along with most of my classmates, and did not complete the A-level course (A2-level), ie. I did not continue to grade 13 (O_O)

In this university, I was not aware of what challenges, if any, that are waiting for me. My first lecture was comforting as Paul explained how easy the subject of Mathematics was and he also outlined the contents of the course. "It's easy after all I like mathematics," I thought. (<_<)

The lessons went smoothly, despite of some misunderstanding in some exercises. This continued until I reached a chapter under the name 'Absolute Values'. Exercises that included absolute values were nightmare. I could not bare to do more than three questions per day, and if I did more, I would be fed up and stop working. It was really annoying at that time. That would be because I did not know what the question asked, and I never heard of such a thing in mathematics called absolute values. What the hell?

After a while, though, I said to myself that I have to go to consultations. It became a bit easier, but even if I mastered it and I could have solved them I would never consider it as part of mathematics. In my opinion, it would be because it does not make any sense. It gives me a very painful headache (>_<)

However, today I mastered it, and it is becoming easier and easier. But, it is not part of mathematics. I would like someone to convince me (<_<)
